Casola in Lunigiana

The medieval mountain village of Casola is located in the valley of the Aulella river, in between the Apuanian Alps and the Appenin mountain range, and overlooked by Pizzo d'Uccello (m 1781) and Monte Tondo (m 1785). A walled village, it was a strategic defence post of the nearby fortresses in Regnano and Codiponte.

Due to various political disputes, Casola had a number of different rulers: First it belonged to the family of Malaspina of Veruccola, then is was property of the Lucca family, and finally it belonged to the Fiorentine Republic and the Grand Dukes of Medici.
